• Tips for an Amazing First Day of Class!

Are you a trial student or a parent who might be wondering how to have a successful first day of class at Next Step Dance Kodiak? We’ve got you! Here are a few tips to help set your dancer (or you!) up for success for your first class and beyond.

Arrive early with your dance gear on or with enough time to change into your clothes before class. This includes having your hair neatly secured back and dance shoes on before you enter the classroom. Dress appropriately for the class – follow the dress code if you are a current student. Trial students should wear clothes they are comfortable moving in, such as leggings and a t-shirt. When you are dressed and ready to go, you can focus more on dancing, having fun, and worrying less about what to wear!

Wait in the lobby until your teacher lets you into class. If the doors are closed, your teacher might be preparing for your class or ending the previous one. Give mom or dad a high five and enter the classroom area with your teacher. If for some reason you arrive after class has begun, enter quietly and join in the lesson without disrupting.

Bring your dance bag and spill-resistant water bottle into the classroom and set it in your cubby. Be sure to wait for designated water breaks or ask your teacher’s permission before you have a drink of water.

Do not chew gum or bring food into the classroom. Help us keep our studio floors clean by finishing your snacks outside of the classroom. Sticky floors can become a hazard for dancers, so it is important to keep the studio clean!

Save your stories and personal conversations for after class. This includes texting on cell phones! Put your cell phone away in a safe place, and make sure it is on silent.

Be attentive. Listen to your teacher’s instructions. Raise your hand to speak and wait to be called upon.

Listen to your classmates’ questions, as the answer will likely benefit you too! If you have a question during class, you probably are not the only one. We can make class time more efficient when we listen to each other’s questions and the answers from the teachers.

Keep your critiques and opinions of others to yourself. Kindness is one of our core values. We all have different skills we can improve on.

Have a positive attitude. Clap for and encourage your classmates whenever possible, and always give your best effort. It’s okay to mess up! We learn through consistent practice, and having a positive attitude makes the experience much more enjoyable.

    Have fun!
